Why You Should Choose a C-NRPP Certified Radon Professional in BC

What C-NRPP certification means, why it matters, and how to verify your radon contractor in BC.

· BC Radon Control

When hiring someone to test or mitigate radon in your home, the most important credential to look for is C-NRPP certification — the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program.

What Is C-NRPP?

C-NRPP is Canada’s national standard for radon professionals. It’s administered by CARST (Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists) and requires:

  • Completing approved radon education courses
  • Passing written and practical examinations
  • Maintaining continuing education
  • Adhering to a professional code of conduct
  • Carrying required insurance

There are two C-NRPP credentials:

  • CRMT — Certified Radon Measurement Technologist (testing)
  • CRM — Certified Radon Mitigator (mitigation/installation)

Why It Matters

Technical competence

Radon mitigation isn’t just drilling a hole and sticking in a fan. Proper mitigation requires:

  • Sub-slab pressure field diagnostics to determine suction point placement
  • Correct fan sizing based on measured flow and pressure
  • Code-compliant pipe routing and exhaust placement
  • Understanding of different foundation types (slab, crawlspace, block wall)

An uncertified contractor may install a system that looks right but doesn’t actually reduce radon levels — or makes it worse by changing air pressure dynamics incorrectly.

Insurance and liability

C-NRPP certified professionals carry required liability insurance. If something goes wrong during installation, you’re protected. Uninsured contractors put homeowners at risk.

Recognized results for real estate

If you’re selling or buying a home, radon test results from a C-NRPP certified technologist are the only results that are widely accepted. Real estate radon tests done by uncertified individuals may not be accepted by buyers, banks, or insurers.

Health Canada endorsement

Health Canada specifically recommends using C-NRPP certified professionals for both testing and mitigation. This is reflected in the “Take Action on Radon” national program.
